HO HO HO Its Christmas~ With a very real twist! A Jaz McKenzie poem.

Oh Christmas tree... how sad... your fate...

Killed by an axe or chainsaw. In your prime. Resplendent.

Situated in a forest full of your peers, your community...

Before being cut down. Intentionally. Felled they say.

Did you scream, silently, when the blade made its way through your trunk?

And how do you feel being transformed into a centre piece?

Whose moment of fame is really a milli-second compared to your lifetime.

A ritual designed because of mans desire to satisfy human culture?

Life before service, and once you have fulfilled your purpose...

Cruelly kicked to the kerb awaiting the refuse collectors.

What a liberty following your lifetime of splendour.

I guess you upheld your destiny, adding joy to this season of merriment.

Becoming a commercial focus for our celebrations.

How sad. But life itself has distorted the perfect Christmas.

I wonder... And with the passing years, change.

A selection of fake replacements serving modern values-

Perfection of a different sort- cheap, sustainable,

Symmetrical and pine needle free... Oh delight!

Enter Father Christmas with his reindeer and elves

A sleigh full of presents, flying through the night sky

While little children dream. Such innocence,

Letters to Santa sent- while his treats await, stockings ready.

And all the time commercial wheels turn.

Marrying money with greed... notching up pressure to provide.

Still keeping up with the Jones's as they used to say.

Marrying money with goodwill... adverts abundant on screens.

Prodding the national conscience to donate, donate, donate.

So credit card bills fly sky high, all that worry caused by one day

Retailers are happy, Banks are happy, And Joe public is broke.

Meanwhile charity pockets bulge- with no public accountability.

But Hey Ho- it's Christmas- NO- Make that HO HO HO it's Christmas

And Santa's on his way!

This poem is much deeper than it appears at first read and what is not said is just as viable. Christmas has become distorted beyond belief with the values attached to it going far beyond the £$£$£'s. This year we are in a far worse recession than last year, and whilst I take a dig at charities because we all know their financial worth exceeds our imaginations whilst nothing really improves, the fact is, many people are in real need of help. I'm thinking it's better to put food in the supermarket collection points and donate directly to less well known or local charities -just a suggestion. Christmas is a season of generosity and real love, yet many ugly emotions often surface that can be quite destructive. I'm not going to preach, but let's just do our part to make the best of this season. Have a happy Christmas Season. Bless.
