#Africa Trending~ Ethiopian New Year by Dean Brown

Happy Ethiopian New Year Everyone! From the birthplace of Coffee which gets it's name from the African mountain region called Keffa, 4000 feet up in the Ethiopian highlands where coffee was first brewed long ago.

😘This holiday is celebrated on September 11th, unless it is a leap year in the Ethiopian calendar, in which case it is celebrated on the 12th September. The Holiday is called Enkutatash in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. This holiday marks 1st of Meskerem, the first day in the Ethiopian calendar. During these celebrations, the little girls carry bright-yellow flowers called Adey Abeba, which are indigenous to Ethiopia and bloom from September to November. 🙂 Modern-Day Ethiopia still embraces its ancient calendar. However, travellers hardly experience any inconveniences because of the calendar difference. Similar to how the Chinese still celebrate their traditional holidays on their own ancient calendar. Most Ethiopians are aware of the Gregorian calendar and some hold both concepts and even use both calendars interchangeably.
